River use tragically comical anecdotes from her life as a way for people to realize that no matter what challenges they face, they can deal with them through dignity, grace and humor.

 

A Positive Life

River talks about discovering that she is HIV positive and how it impacted her life. She also shares slides from her book A Positive Life: Portraits of Women Living With AIDS.

Surviving the Weekend:

“Can You Drink Responsibly?”

Through humor and audience participation I examine: Warning Signs of Alcohol Abuse and Binge Drinking  HOW To Drink Responsibly HOW Attitude Affect Risky Behavior HOW Drugs & Alcohol Affect  Sexual Decisions.

I give a personal narrative of surviving my own problems with alcohol including an alcohol related sexual assault. I talk about how my dependence on alcohol,  and my decision to quit drinking in my first year of college. I do not advocate abstinence from alcohol but rather informed choice and awareness.  During the presentation I encourage students to text questions and comments. This makes each presentation uniquely relevant to each group as well as making it easier to discuss sensitive issues such as sexual assault, alcohol abuse and safe sex.
