SEX 101: SURVIVING THE WEEKEND

Brock University 2009

ISSUES ADDRESSED

  • Alcohol and sex
  • Prevention
  • What is sexual assault
  • Bystander intervention
  • Communication
  • Mixed Messages
  • Survivors

This presentation is about sex, how to have safe sex, how to avoid sexual assault and what to do when you or a friend has either had unsafe sex or have been assaulted.

Part one is basic information about safe sex and how to make it a desirable choice.

The second part is about sexual assault. I tell my story of surviving an alcohol fueled sexual assault and how we need to  continue the conversation around this violent, silent epidemic.

I use text messaging as a way for people to ask questions that they normally would be too embarrassed or afraid to ask in a public forum.

My goal is to create a safe place for students to participate in a candid discussion about sex and sexual assault. I want people to graduate with a degree not a rapt sheet, a restraining order or really bad memories.

HOW TO LOWER THE RISK OF SEXUAL ASSAULT

According to the AMA, sexual assault continues to represent the most rapidly growing violent crime in America, claiming a victim every 45 seconds. Many of these attacks occurring daily go unreported and unrecognized. 1 in four women in college have experienced some form of sexual assault. Then even more unspoken 1 in 8 men. It affects all of us.

Break The Myths:

Only women can be sexually assaulted.

Victims who truly resist cannot be raped.

No really doesn't mean no.

Nice girls don't get raped

She/He asked for it.

Male rape victims subconsciously desired and complied with their assault.
